Day 1 WIP of my game for the Fishing Game Jam, Thiefstongue. So far I’ve got:

A full day-cycle that works fine.
Changing CSS/backgrounds to illustrate mood/passage of time
Tracking the types & amount of fish you catch, with an NPC who responds to the amount of fish you give him (currently you can only succeed on this, but soon)
6 types of fish, corresponding to 3 types of lure.
Encounter chances that change with time of day.

This probably could’ve been done a hell of a lot more efficiently with the changing-tags-via-code macro that Leon Arnott made, but I couldn’t get that to work in the past, so each time of day has its own iteration of the fishing cycle (the “1-shape o-shape {diamond} {slope} {diamond} {slope}..), as well as versions of the description text for all the fish (the 3x6 block). This makes it easier to plot out encounter rates and keep track of variables, so there’s that. Evening fishing isn’t in the above nodemap but is in the current build (aforementioned NPC is also missing here).

Overall I’m happy with how this is going. Next is going to be PLOT STUFF hopefully, a new fish type, as well as getting the day cycle to start actually cycling. After that.. I want to maybe do some images for this one? Depends how appalling my pixel art gets I guess. I’d kinda like to try my hand at that. But this game can happily exist without imagery, so I’m not going to do that until I’ve got the rest sorted.

In the course of developing sophisticated imaging techniques for peering into the robot body, Hong Kong–based radiologist Dr. Kai-hung Fung discovered something within himself: an artist.

The discovery happened when Fung was asked by surgeons to generate 3-D images to allow them to visualize complex anatomies prior to surgery. Beginning with CT scans that show slices of organs at different depths, Fung stacked the slices into a single image and developed a way to indicate changes in depth with contour lines similar to those on a topographic map.

Adding “millions of colors and the infinite combination of different shades of colors can be more informative than the simple steps of grey scale,” Fung wrote in an email about how he came up with the idea.

The Amazing Underwater Forest of Lake Kaindy

What makes Lake Kaindy truly remarkable is that it contains an underwater forest. Visible on the lakes surface are the tall, dried-out tops of submerged Spruce trees that rise above the water’s surface like the masts of sunken ships. They are the only sign of the amazing frozen forest below the water’s surface.

The water is so cold (even in summer the temperature does not exceed 6 degrees) that the pine needles remain on the trees, even after a hundred years of being submerged. During the winter, the lake freezes and becomes a popular spot for ice diving.

The lake is 400 meters long and is located in Kazakhstan’s portion of the Tian Shan Mountains, about 129 km from the city of Almaty. The lake was created after an earthquake in 1911 triggered a large landslide blocking the gorge and forming a natural dam.

The thing with a “main character”, is that the reader see the story/world from that characters point of view - we can often read the characters thoughts and feelings more than other characters in the story. You can also use the perspective to increase this “effect”.

You can use the eye-level to display the world seen from the main character. Look at the two pictures above, the characters have the same size on both pictures - the only difference I’ve made is to switch eye-level. And by just doing this, we switch between the adult and the kids point of view - even though they both look at the same thing.

So, when you are doing a perspective, FIRST decide the eye-level and after that start placing out all those annoying guidelines.

The mission of the strip is to depict skateboarding in a way that doesn’t fall back on the typical presentation of skateboarding. It rejects any notion that all skaters simply want to “make it big,” or still say “radical” all the time. This comic strip is a depiction of skateboarding as it is, a diverse culture of individuals with their own motivations, goals, and inhibitions.

It’s rare that I ever see comics get this right, which completely baffles me. Comics and skateboarding relate on so many levels, and this strip is about further bridging the gap between the two.
